Closing the Gap: Why Young Adult Survival Rates are Lagging
Warning: Annoying Acronym Alert is at Level Orange for the following info:
The Data
In a landmark moment for young adults with cancer, the National Cancer Institute released the first detailed publication dedicated to cancer incidence and outcomes in adolescents and young adults, Cancer Epidemiology in Older Adolescents and Young Adults 15 to 29 Years of Age, Including SEER Incidence and Survival: 1975-2000. Contributors to the publication include PC medical advisors Archie Bleyer, M.D. and Karen Albritton, M.D. (which may explain how PC wormed it's way into the resource section). Lots of interesting info, including detailed data on the gap in improvement in survival rates for young adults. Click here to read.
The Recommendations
The National Cancer Institute (NCI), in partnership with the LiveSTRONG Young Adult Alliance, published the recommendations from the Adolescent and Young Adult Oncology Progress Review Group (AYAO PRG). This is important because it's the first time young adult cancer has taken center stage at the federal level. The recommendations set a national agenda to advance adolescent and young adult oncology. PRG participants included PC Executive Director Heidi Adams and all members of the PC Medical Advisory Board, including Dr. Karen Albritton, who co-chaired the whole shebang.
